Researchers say that our phones aren't listening in on us... but might be watching us

So, there has been this ongoing urban legend that certain apps on your phone will use the device's microphone even when its asleep in your pocket or on a table. It would listen in on real-life conversations, trying to pick up specific keywords in order to serve targeted ads immediately after.

Computer science academics at the Northeastern University set out to examine if there's any truth to this myth. For the past year, they have been testing around 17,000 of the most popular apps on Android, including Facebook and some 8,000 apps that sync with Facebook.
